Children's Programming

1000 Books Before Kindergarten!

The Rochester Public Library is happy to announce a new program called “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten “ .

The verdict is in. Research  has shown that the more children ages 0-5 hear books read to them, the more prepared they will be to learn to read upon entering kindergarten. Our goals in offering this program are:
  • To ensure that your child will enter kindergarten ready to read
  • To instill a lifelong love of reading in your child
  • To establish a positive connection to the library for your family and child
  • To reinforce your parental role as your child’s first and best teacher

Getting started is EASY!  Parents may come in to sign up and receive the child’s reading folder which will include a reading log.  Parent/caregiver will fill out the log with each book that is read to the child.  It is also okay to read his/her favorite book more than once and log it!  After completing each 100 book milestone, return your folder to the library and receive an incentive and your next reading log.  Upon finishing 1000 books read, your child will receive a special prize, be ever so much smarter and ready for school.
